How we handle French pronunciation and gender with children

In French, what is written and what is heard are two different things — silent endings, liaison, and nasal vowels that do not exist in Hindi or English. We teach sound before spelling: children hear and say a word for weeks before they ever write it. Noun gender is taught by colour from day one — le in blue, la in red — on every flashcard and every board, so gender is remembered as part of the word rather than learned later as a rule.

The DELF pathway

Students are additionally guided towards the appropriate DELF examination, depending on age and demonstrated proficiency. DELF is awarded by the French Ministry of Education, is recognised internationally and is valid for life. In India it is conducted at Alliance Française centres. NIL prepares students for it, trains them in the exam format, runs the mock examinations and assists with registration — the diploma itself comes from the French Ministry of Education.

Questions parents ask

Why should my child learn French?
French is taught as a second language in many Indian schools, and it is spoken across 29 countries, which makes it one of the more useful languages a child can start early. It also opens a study route: France and Canada both host large numbers of Indian students, and NIL runs a study-abroad consultancy that handles applications and visas. The DELF diploma this course prepares for is issued by the French Ministry of Education, recognised internationally and valid for life. [PLACEHOLDER: confirm whether this course counts towards a CBSE, ICSE or IB second-language credit, and name which boards.]
Is my child the right age for this?
The programme takes children from 7 to 16, with one curriculum, one set of milestones and one certificate for everyone — no separate age tracks. Pacing is what changes: your coordinator adjusts it to your child's age, prior exposure to French, attendance and progress. The DELF exam itself is age-adapted rather than age-restricted — younger children sit DELF Prim and those aged 11 and above sit DELF Junior, at the same level.
Does my child need to have studied French before?
No. Stage 1 begins at the French alphabet and its sound system, then greetings, introductions, numbers and colours, so a child who has never met a French word is exactly who it is designed for. If your child already studies French at school, a short placement test sets the entry stage and the fee is adjusted proportionately.
How much screen time does this add?
Three live classes a week of 60 minutes each — three hours of class time, plus guided practice and homework between them. Much of the rest is deliberately off-screen: the stage projects are scrapbooks, presentations and craft rather than more screen time.
Do I need to sit with my child during class?
Classes run in batches of 6 to 8 children with a trainer leading them, so your child is taught directly and does not need you beside them. [PLACEHOLDER: confirm whether a parent is expected to settle a younger child for the first few minutes, and whether that differs at 7 and at 14.] You receive a written progress report at the end of every stage covering speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and participation. Children are never ranked against each other.
What if my child misses a class?
Classes are recorded and a catch-up sheet is issued, and two make-up classes per stage are included so a genuine clash does not cost your child the topic.
What is the refund policy?
Under our Terms of Service we do not refund fees except where we are unable to provide the service. If we cannot provide classes according to your schedule, we process a full refund within 7 working days. It is not a change-of-mind refund, which is what makes the free demo class the point at which you decide. Each stage is also priced and paid for on its own, so the most you commit to at once is a single two-month stage.
What level will my child reach, and does it lead to DELF?
Your child starts at CEFR A1.1 and each two-month stage moves up one step of the published ladder. Yes, it leads to DELF: students are guided towards the DELF examination appropriate to their age and demonstrated proficiency, and NIL trains them in the exam format, runs the mock examinations and assists with registration. The diploma itself is awarded by the French Ministry of Education and taken at an Alliance Française centre in India — NIL prepares students for it but does not award it. Progression and certification at every stage are based on assessment and demonstrated proficiency, not on time elapsed.
