How we handle German grammar with children

German has three genders, four cases and a word order that moves. Taught as rules, it defeats children. We teach gender by colour from day one — der in blue, die in red, das in green, on every flashcard and every board — and introduce cases through use before they are ever named.

  • derblue
  • diered
  • dasgreen

Parent Progress Report

Parents receive a stage-wise progress report covering:

  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Vocabulary
  • Grammar
  • Participation

Each area is reported against what the child can now do in German, with one specific recommendation for the coming stage. Children are never ranked against each other.

Certification & Progression

NIL certification

NIL Young German Masters — A1 to C1 Programme Completion Certificate

External certification

The Goethe pathway

Students are additionally guided towards the appropriate Goethe-Zertifikat examination, based on age and demonstrated proficiency. The Goethe-Zertifikat is issued by the Goethe-Institut and conducted in India at Max Mueller Bhavan centres — NIL prepares students for it and guides the pathway; the certificate itself comes from the Goethe-Institut.

Important: C1 is an advanced CEFR level. The programme should be positioned as an intensive 12-month pathway, with actual progression and certification based on assessment and demonstrated proficiency. Pacing may be adjusted for age, prior exposure, attendance and learning outcomes.

Suggested implementation model.

Recommended Weekly Delivery Model

2–3 live classes per week, plus guided practice, homework and project work. Each 2-month stage can be organised into approximately 8 teaching weeks.

Questions parents ask

Why should my child learn German?
German is one of the second-language options offered in many Indian schools, and it is the language a student needs for an undergraduate or postgraduate pathway to Germany, where public universities charge no tuition fee to international students. NIL also runs a study-abroad consultancy that handles applications and visas. [PLACEHOLDER: confirm whether this course counts towards a CBSE, ICSE or IB second-language credit, and name which boards — parents ask this before anything else, and it cannot be answered by inference.]
Is my child the right age for this?
The programme takes children from 7 to 16. There is one curriculum, one set of milestones and one certificate for everyone — no separate age tracks. What changes is pacing: your coordinator adjusts it to your child's age, prior exposure to German, attendance and progress.
Does my child need to have studied German before?
No. Stage 1 starts at the very beginning — the German alphabet, the sounds ä, ö, ü and ß, greetings and numbers — so a child who has never seen a German word is exactly who it is built for. If your child has studied German already, a short placement test decides the entry stage and the fee is adjusted proportionately.
How much screen time does this add?
2 to 3 live classes a week, plus guided practice, homework and project work between them. [PLACEHOLDER: how long one class runs, in minutes — this is the number the question actually turns on and the page states it nowhere.] A good share of the work is off-screen by design: the projects are scrapbooks, art, craft and presentations rather than more screen time.
Do I need to sit with my child during class?
Classes run in batches of 6 to 8 children with a Goethe-Institut certified trainer, so your child is taught directly and does not need you beside them. [PLACEHOLDER: confirm whether a parent is expected to settle a younger child for the first few minutes, and whether that differs at 7 and at 14.] You get a written progress report at the end of every stage covering speaking, listening, reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and participation, with one specific recommendation for the stage ahead. Children are never ranked against each other.
What if my child misses a class?
Classes are recorded and a catch-up sheet is issued, so your child can cover what was missed before the next one. Your coordinator will confirm the make-up arrangements for your batch.
What is the refund policy?
Under our Terms of Service, we do not refund fees except where we are unable to provide the service. If we cannot provide classes according to your schedule, we process a full refund within 7 working days. It is not a change-of-mind refund, so the demo class matters: it is free, and it is where you decide. Each stage is also priced and paid for on its own, so the most you commit to at once is a single two-month stage.
What level will my child reach?
Your child starts at CEFR A1.1, and each two-month stage moves up one step: A1.1, A1.2, A2, B1, B2 and C1 across the twelve months. C1 is an advanced level, so treat this as an intensive pathway rather than a guaranteed date — progression and certification at every stage are based on assessment and demonstrated proficiency, not on time elapsed, and pacing is adjusted for age, prior exposure, attendance and outcomes. Alongside NIL's own stage and programme certificates, students are guided towards the matching Goethe-Zertifikat exam. That certificate is issued by the Goethe-Institut and taken at a Max Mueller Bhavan centre — NIL prepares students for it and guides the pathway, but does not award it.

Actual progression and certification at each level are based on assessment and demonstrated proficiency. For children, pacing is adjusted according to age, prior exposure to German, attendance and learning outcomes.
